The Brief

Manahatta Newcastle engaged Pro Technical to deliver a commercial audio‑visual and lighting installation suitable for a busy bar and hospitality venue. The brief required distributed background music, zoned audio control to manage multiple trading areas, and venue lighting capable of supporting both daytime ambience and evening event or performance conditions. The installation needed to be serviceable for venue staff and the operator’s technical team.

The Challenge

The venue is a busy hospitality space with multiple seating and bar areas where consistent background music levels and intelligible program audio were essential. The project needed to respect sightlines and the customer experience while preserving straightforward operational control for staff. Because the venue operates across daytime trading and higher‑level evening activity, the systems had to be flexible enough to support zoned background music as well as amplified performance or event use without disrupting day‑to‑day service.

Design decisions and approach

Pro Technical’s design focused on three principal outcomes: consistent coverage across distinct trading zones, simple local control for front‑of‑house staff, and an installation architecture that minimised ongoing maintenance complexity. To meet these outcomes we specified a distributed sound topology with separate control zones for principal seating and bar areas. Control access points were positioned for operational convenience so staff could adjust foreground levels quickly without requiring technical intervention. Lighting designs provided pre‑set scenes for daytime, evening and event use, with scene recall positioned to align with staff workflows. Where possible the architecture separated user controls from technical system settings to reduce accidental alterations to system tuning.

Equipment and system architecture (summary)

This case study describes venue‑level scope rather than an itemised bill of materials. The installed architecture delivered zoned audio distribution with centralised processing and local control interfaces for staff. Rack‑mounted equipment provided system management and signal distribution; wall‑mounted control panels and zone controls gave staff immediate access to commonly used functions. Lighting was implemented with a mix of general wash and sceneable fixtures, allowing programmed scene recall and straightforward day‑to‑day adjustments. Cabling and rack layout were executed to industry installation standards to preserve service access and reliability.

Installation

Installation work followed a coordinated programme to integrate audio and lighting without impeding venue fit‑out. Equipment racks were installed in accessible plant locations with labelled patching and segregated power distribution to support future servicing. Speaker mounting and cable routing were completed to provide secure, concealed runs where appropriate while maintaining access panels and isolation points for maintenance. Control interfaces and user panels were located in staff areas and programmed with simplified control pages tailored to routine tasks such as zone volume, mute and scene recall.

Commissioning

Commissioning concentrated on achieving even audio level balance across the venue’s zones and verifying functional lighting scene recall. Audio commissioning included level calibration, live listening across principal customer areas and confirmation of intelligibility at normal operating levels. Lighting commissioning verified correct addressing, scene timing and the interaction between lighting scenes and staff controls. Final checks confirmed that local control permitted the required day‑to‑day operation while system settings required authorised access for deeper adjustments.

The Result

Pro Technical completed a commercial AV and lighting installation for Manahatta Newcastle providing zoned audio distribution and venue lighting configured for daytime trade and event use. The systems deliver consistent background music coverage, accessible local control for staff and a serviceable installation layout to support routine maintenance. Commissioning validated even audio coverage across zones and reliable lighting scene recall aligned with venue workflows.
